Christophe Correia develops a painterly practice rooted in contemporary figurative realism, in which oil painting becomes a space for exploring inner life, memory, and the human condition. Through symbolic and metaphorical imagery, his work examines the tensions that shape individual experience, moving between vulnerability, fear, transformation, and the search for meaning.
Born in France into a family of Portuguese origin and raised in northern Portugal, between Braga and Viana do Castelo, Correia grew up at the intersection of different cultural heritages. His relationship with visual art began in childhood, nurtured in part by his discovery of life-drawing studies by Lucinda, his mother's cousin and a secondary-school art teacher. This early encounter with drawing marked one of the first milestones in a lasting relationship with artistic creation.
Trained in product design in Viana do Castelo, Correia developed a particular sensitivity to form, composition, and the construction of images. Although his academic background did not follow a conventional fine arts path, drawing and painting remained constant practices, gradually asserting themselves as a personal language and a means of investigating reality.
A road trip through southern Spain in 2018 marked a decisive turning point in his artistic journey. From Figueres and Cadaqués to Seville, his encounters with landscapes, places, and artistic heritage transformed his perception of painting and helped reveal a deeper necessity to create. He subsequently devoted himself more fully to oil painting, a medium he values for its expressive possibilities, material presence, and capacity to reconcile figurative precision with emotional intensity.
His work unfolds today within a space where the visible engages with the invisible. Figures, bodies, and symbolic compositions become vehicles for an inner narrative, transforming lived experiences into images that remain open to interpretation. Rather than presenting a single, unequivocal narrative, his paintings evoke psychological states, weave connections between the intimate and the universal, and reveal the underlying tensions that shape human existence.
Situated at the intersection of figurative realism, contemporary symbolism, and a Neo-Baroque sensibility, Christophe Correia explores painting as a space for revelation and inquiry. His work invites viewers to move beyond immediate representation and enter a territory where emotion takes form, memory becomes tangible, and the image opens a dialogue between the artist's individual experience and that of the viewer.
